Delightful & RARE antique Carl Thieme, Dresden or Meissen porcelain 8" PUG male figure, exceptional detail to the hand painted decoration shown seated on a floral mound/plinth and with a wonderful cobalt blue & gold enamel collar with pink ribbon on the back! Isn't this one great! Quite unique, most of the pugs you see don't have any sort of base...the only ones I've seen so far with a similar base are attributed to Meissen. Another unique aspect of this piece is the original factory flaw evident in that base, a small crack that is surely from the firing. If you look at it closely, you can see that it isn't a break, no way it could break in that fashion, so it must be from the factory. Today, we'd call that a 'second' or something, right :). Kind of like a postage stamp printed in reverse, in my opinion, making it even more rare and collectible. Due to the crack, the base has been filled which is where the maker mark would most likely have been so, I'm not able to definitively attribute it to a maker. Definitely no reproduction though, guaranteed. Again, I've searched and the only pieces of comparable quality that I've seen really aren't as attractive as this not-so-little guy and NONE have the incorporated base with floral decoration. A real treasure! Porcelain figurines were originally used to demonstrate the wealth, prestige and influence of the host! They provided such visual entertainment that the fashion quickly flourished. This a wonderful example and guaranteed to please! Don't miss him!
Very good to excellent condition. As noted, there is what definitely has to be an original factory flaw in the base. The base/plinth would likely have been hollow in the bottom but was filled to reinforce the flaw so the piece is as solid as can be and surely more durable than originally intended. No other chips, cracks or flaws that I can see. Just as charming as can be. See pictures for measurements.
