The gnomes are the rarest of all the figures carved by those amazing artisans of 19th century Black Forest regions (mostly thought of as Swiss carvings). This little guy is spectacular! I guess you can't really say "life-like" since he's not real, but his anatomy certainly suggests there are little forest gnomes, sprites, fairies and the rest of the forest lore. The stand is entirely hand carved in wood, probably Linden wood or similar, used in these old ones. And the blown glass thermometer is mounted on milk glass, both of which remain in excellent condition. We've shown him well. Consider that the item is 10" tall, with a 6" gnome and the base is 5.25" x 3.5". Darling little guy with his elf hat and boots, isn't he.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. I see nothing to report apart from a tiny lightened stain on his nose, probably from rubbing him for good luck. No chips, no cracks, no wood worm holes, and no damage at all to the milk glass or blown glass of the thermometer. Functions perfectly, and the rare notation of both fahrenheit and centigrade makes him an international gnome, to be sure.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
