LOVE the hare! And love the forest or emerald green mouth-blown flutes set into this pair of vase or epergne stands. We often find that the old glass inserts have been lost over time, but this is the original form for these mantel or table garnitures, and the glass portions are in excellent condition, no chips. The hand carved hare and the hound chasing after him on the opposite stand are worked into very adeptly carved forest scenes. Good sized, the carved bases are each about 8" tall, and 13" tall overall with the glass inserted. You might wish to use them for candles, and the glass flutes can be removed safely for that alternate use.
Very good condition for age and type. Nicely crafted (more so the hare than the hound, I think), the wooden stands have a few flaws notable: there has been some old (no longer active) wood worm infestation, which is quite common in the 19th century Black Forest items. You see the evidence of it as very tiny round holes left when the larvae in the wood chews its way out. As noted, not anything active. Most all of these have been treated for such infestations ages ago. But the little bit of wood worm evidence is often something modern furniture makers want to mimic for the charm and to give a certain age to their reproductions. I find it a bit charming in the old ones. Perhaps you do, as well. In any case, enough said about that. You'll see a chip on one of the leaf-expansions on bottom of base, and perhaps another small imperfection to the old wood I maybe have overlooked. I just love these old carvings and am always thrilled to find a pair in this nice a condition, still original and together.
