Just in from France, this is a thick heavy and solid mahogany bracket or clock shelf with a figural theme of Renaissance Page (servant), and it's huge at 17" in length. You might want to mount it with a clock on top, or some other item like a blue/white vase. The carving is nicely accomplished, and the old stain is in good form apart from what appears to be "lucky" rubs to his nose. As if repeated touches for luck, or similar routine touching of his nose has worn away the stain. I've left it that way for your review, but a brush and some mahogany stain will bring it back to a more original finish. It is not a chip, just a rubbing away of the stain. The face is approximately life-sized, to help you gauge the size of this lovely old treasure. One would do well to mount it in a Master bath, perhaps, and stack folded towels up top for fun. You'll find the perfect way to use this one. It is 17" from platform top to bottom; 13" widest, 8.5" deep to wall.
Very good condition for age and type, it has a couple of small chips on the upper rim of hat, and the rub to his nose (not a chip, just the stain rubbed away). There are slight shrinkage separations visible at the seams of the boards that have been put together to make the solid mahogany slab from which it has been crafted. And the only break I see is there on the feather that droops from his hat - repaired long long ago. Measurements are noted on the photos, and the hanging hardware is still in place on back - ready to hang and enjoy. It's accents like this that put both personality and flair into a well-decorated home. Will do so, in this case, with either contemporary interior or antiques, I think.
