Elegant antique Napoleon III or Victorian era French silver & carved mother of pearl writer's wax seal or sceau, ornate silver seal tip with hallmarks & "DD" or "DP" monogram! In a day when the hand written letter is something we remember and long for, but seem to never quite find time to write, it's all the more interesting to note the upsurge of popularity of all things related to it. And did you know that, even today in France, the 'valor declare' method of sending a package requires it be wrapped with string and then each string sealed with wax and a seal? A "sceau" or seal is an imprint intended to guarantee the authenticity of a document or information, and to make clear its possible disclosure or alteration. The term also refers to the object, the matrix that allows for this footprint. The etymology of the word is the Latin sigillum, which is the diminutive of signum, meaning sign. We just love the romance of the old monogrammed seals pressed to that rich red wax, don't we. The tiny boar's head hallmark is French for .800 silver. One of six fabulous old wax seals or sceau that we're adding this week (with more to come), not to mention the host of wonderful old writing boxes, implements & seals we currently have available so, be sure to browse a bit while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. Some slight surface marks to the pearl, visible in the images and would surely come off if cleaned. Solid mother of pearl, no chips, cracks or other damage. See pictures for measurements.
