Fabulous antique French Napoleon III to Belle Epoque era hallmarked silver wax seal or sceau: elegant French Empire or Aesthetic styling and wonderful condition! In a day when the hand written letter is something we remember and long for, but seem to never quite find time to write, it's all the more interesting to note the upsurge of popularity of all things related to it. And did you know that, even today in France, the 'valor declare' method of sending a package requires it be wrapped with string and then each string sealed with wax and a seal? A "sceau" or seal is an imprint intended to guarantee the authenticity of a document or information, and to make clear its possible disclosure or alteration. The term also refers to the object, the matrix that allows for this footprint. The etymology of the word is the Latin sigillum, which is the diminutive of signum, meaning sign. We just love the romance of the old monogrammed seals pressed to that rich red wax, don't we. This one sans monogram so it's unused, unless as a pipe tobacco tamper. The piece is 2 3/4" in height, the seal base or tip is 5/8" x 1/2". It bears a French silver hallmark, there is a silversmith mark of "PG" but I've not found a reference to it as of yet. We have an exact matching seal, complete with monogram and fitted box, that we're also listing this week. Both date from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The 'boar's head' hallmark was used post-1838 and designates it as being in at least .800 silver (80% pure so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). Lovely, one for the collector AND one of six fabulous old wax seals or sceau that we're adding this week (with more to come), not to mention the host of wonderful old writing boxes, implements & seals we currently have available so, be sure to browse a bit while you're with us. Thanks!

Very good to excellent condition. Some light surface marks, possibly a tiny dimple or two but no notable damage and no repairs. See pictures for weight and all measurements.
