Fabulous, large antique to vintage Austrian hallmarked .800 (nearly sterling) silver 18 3/8" x 14 3/8" tray with beautiful & ornate machined or engraved decoration, shaped bordering and wonderful condition! Rare larger size, this one is perfect to use as a serving tray and would also be superb as a display piece for a fine antique sterling silver coffee & tea set! Isn't the engraved or incised decoration gorgeous! Small hallmarks on the curve of one side, Vienna city mark inside ("A") and the number "3" means it's in at least .800 silver (80% pure so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). A common silver content in continental pieces though, the lower silver content actually gives the piece added strength and durability due to the more pliable nature of pure silver. The shape of the hallmark with the Diana head inside designates it as dating between 1867-1922. There is also another small hallmark consisting of what looks like a compass & sector, possibly a silversmith mark but I've not been able to find reference to it. In any event, you have an elegant, large Continental silver tray here, don't miss it!
Very good to excellent condition. I've just polished it and noted only a small dimple or two (you can see in the images that there are no dents, damage or repairs). Also, the oval center of the tray has a bit of a 'satin' or slightly textured surface with the bordering and center oval medallion with a polished finish. A beautiful piece.
