This handsome box would have likely been once filled with tobacco, cigars, or something very masculine. Or perhaps bonbons for the gentleman? Dating to c.1880-1910, it's a rather simple but large table box that will find itself at home with Black Forest carved hunt theme items, and is a wonderful work of art. I can't affirm that it's a cast bronze panel. I think it is a lighter metal, really, but it has the patina of bronze and is gorgeous. A wonderful idea for Father's Day!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the old box top has not been dented nor damaged. The wood is nicely preserved and shows age and just the right amount of roughness. Dove-tailed joints on corners and a mitered corner for the top which frames the cast woodland scene well. Some scrapes on the bottom, consistent with age. There are supports on the interior sides which indicate there would have been a lift-out tray. That tray is no longer with the box. Photos show it well.
