A superb 200-year old pendant (give or take a few years) that still holds the plaited hair of someone's dearly departed. This pendant is a locket, as you can see, and the backside has a cover glass, too, and can be pulled out in order to insert your own family memento, lock of hair, small photo - whatever. The pendant would have originally been considered mourning jewelry. The seed pearls are iconographic and represent the tears shed by the one left behind to mourn the loss. The hair in this one is grey with a few darker ones mingled in, so this one mourns a person in their old age, which in Georgian times could mean mid-40s. The gold has been tested and is 18k solid gold. Larger than most, this is a superb piece of the past. Lovely as it is, or to be cherished as an heirloom in your own family if you change out the hair with a plaiting of someone's from your own family. These need no longer be mourning memento, remember - you could plait a lock of hair from each of your own children and have it be a wonderful Mom's memento. Or put a tiny photo in back and some other memento in the front, such as a petal from your bridal bouquet and a wedding photo. Something old!
Very good to excellent for age and type, there appears to be no flaw at all if you look at it with your naked eye, but in greatly enlarged scans and photos you can see there is a very slight rim roughness to the cover glass on the backside. All the pearls are beautiful, high pearlescent and lustrous, and all appear evenly matched and original to this pendant. Note that the bale is made separate from the pendant, yet has the same beautiful seed pearls. A superb piece!
