Magnificent antique Victorian era Black Forest hand carved cigar or tobacco smoker's caddy, a rough wood barrel cigar holder with majestic mountain goat figure above and rare fox crouching below! A stunning older work c.1860-80s, the detail here is fantastic and the figures are the finest! A GREAT Animalier period work! A huge, impressively carved goat stands on rocky outcroppings just above & behind the cigar holder, the curls of his coat and positioning is truly amazing! A small fox figure on the chase below, a seemingly impossible conquest to be had but the visual appeal is immense! Deep, rich finish to the wood....the other nearly unbelievable aspect is that the entire work has been carved from one solid block of wood! HUGE, considering the finished size, the starting block must have been immense....you can even see the rings of the tree in the base. Superb, museum quality and one you'd not be surprised to see in an old Swiss or German castle setting. Don't miss it.
Very good condition. It appears that the goat would originally have had horns, just the raised bumps evident now. A small chip or two elsewhere but no age or drying splits in any of the legs, solid base, etc. There are remnants of an ebony finish here & there, most obvious on the mountain goat figure and visible in the images. See pictures for measurements.
