Very fine & rare 19th century Victorian era carved bone crucified Christ figure, displayed on a wonderful burled wood plaque with mother of pearl roundel accents! A very unique and interesting piece, the figure itself is caved from solid bone and relatively crudely done. I believe this one is Jansenite in origin. Jansenism may be explained symbolically by the style of crucifix it favored. On a regular cross, Christ is represented with His arms outstretched to embrace all, if possible, within the bounds of His mercy, and with His head cast down, looking at us upon the earth. The Jansenists made crucifixes on which Christ's hands are nailed to the wood, straight above His head, and His eyes are turned up to heaven. The Jansenist crucifix symbolically suggested that only a few souls are permitted to receive forgiveness, and that Jesus is somehow avoiding the sight of our sinful world. Solid wood wall plaque with richly burled veneer facade and ebonized beveled edges. The finishing touch are the brass & mother of pearl 'jewels' around the border, wonderful! A truly fine piece and a fabulous decorative wall hanging!
Very good condition! A small portion of the bone 'crossed bones' below the figure has broken. Minor age or drying splits in the ebonized crucifix but no splits or damage to the wall plaque. See pictures for measurements.
