What a superb old Victorian era face screen this one is. The hand painted decoration is marvelous! Inlays of mother of pearl and all that Chinoiserie (oriental) figural presentation, in such nice condition. One you'll love hanging on the wall as art, or resting on a tabletop near your fireplace as it once would have been, offered to friends to shield their delicate cheeks from the heat (and blush) of the fire that heats the room. These old screens are not fans, they are fire screens, helping to protect the old early wax-based make-up from melting and streaking down the face of a guest. The charm of their function, the elaborate variation in the manner they were created, make them a very fun item to collect and display either fireside or on a bedroom wall as art.
Very good to excellent for age and type, this one has almost nothing by way of flaw, perhaps very slight imperfection around the shaped outer ridge, but not really chips. No breaks, no restorations. The old original wood handle (lathe-turned and ebonized) is both original and perfectly mounted still. This is more beautiful in person, even with our professional photographer's images to show it off. Collect a grouping of them! The measurements are noted directly on our photos.
