Delightful antique Belgian oil painting on canvas, a rendition of a Antoine Joseph Wiertz painting entitled "Le Chien dans sa Niche" or "The Dog in the Kennel" now on display in the Musee Wiertz in Brussels, with artist signature appearing to be "T. Gerard (or T. Evrard?) d'apres Wiertz"! An antique itself, this painting is just fabulous! I've included an image of the original Wiertz painting here so you can see how closely this slightly later rendition is. The wood stretcher and artist's signature in the lower right corner. A lovely painting and guaranteed to please!
Wiertz was not primarily an animal painter, completing many portraits, landscapes, allegorical and biblical subjects. He was a pupil of M. Van Bree at the Antwerp Academy and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1832. A museum was created in 1850 that houses the majority of his works.
Wiertz was celebrated as a national hero when he died in 1865 and a monument was put up in his honour in Ixelles. Following his wishes, the former studio was turned into a museum, displaying more than 200 of his works – all fixed permanently to the wall, as he had instructed – along with his easel and other sentimental relics.
In the early days, Belgians would enjoy the macabre thrill of visiting the museum to look at paintings such as “Premature Burial,” in which a terrified man struggles to escape the coffin in which he is about to be buried. They also enjoyed the moral lesson of his painting “Hunger, Madness and Crime,” showing a destitute mother boiling her baby’s leg in a cooking pot. And they no doubt felt empathy for the dead man in “The Suicide,” who blew his brains out after receiving a tax demand.
Very good condition. No rips or tears to the canvas, the stretcher is fully intact. There is a 'push' in the canvas, visible on the front in the upper right corner of the doghouse door area. See pictures for measurements.
