Antique Victorian to Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved sliding book rack with fabulous nested birds on each end, oak leaves and acorns and even eggs in that deep nest. A very large rack, those sides are 9" tall and it expands to 32". Carving throughout, including the 4 birds, is just magnificent quality, and the loving furled wing pair's pose that is just charming. The beautifully carved rack is a full 32" when opened fully for your books, so much larger than most of these available. The width is 7.25" and when opened, each side is a full 9" tall. Folded and closed, it is 18.5" long, 7.25" wide and about 3" deep. We'd date this superb old book rack as being one c.1880-1900. A Grand Tour souvenir type item.
Very good condition overall, with exquisitely carved large side mounts that are very deep bas relief, wonderful anatomical studies! There are a couple chips to note and you'll find them with this notation: 2 wings have chips, one side has chips to 3 acorns that rest between the oak leaves beneath the large nest; the one slide feature has a slit (base). I see nothing to indicate any restorations at all. It displays just beautifully, is larger than most and expands to a full 32" to hold your old leather bound books or your cookbooks, perhaps, in a French Country decor. A sweet example of the old carver's artistry we all love so. See photos for measurements.

If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
