A rare exquisite masterpiece of Swiss "Black Forest" carving, this 11.75" chest or jewelry box, casket, is one of the most remarkably fine ones we've had in many years. Large and impressive, but more the quality of the carving and the condition it presents us after more than a century, this one sets itself apart not only in the delicacy of the carving and surface decoration, but also as one of the most elegant carvings ever. I wish it were signed. I'm sure the artisan/sculptor who made this one is a noted. Look at the fine precision detail, the overall design and even more, the lack of damage to this one for its very advanced age. A true treasure, rare find! Such a pleasure to have enjoyed it on my dining room table for many months now, but it is time to let it go. Sadly. I can't keep everything, can I. You will absolutely love owning this one - none finer. The anatomical representation of the beautiful pair of pheasants up top is amazing, and of course from the Animalier movement. We think this one dates about c.1880-1900, but might be 10 years either side. Interior is original, too, and in fine condition. Alas, no working key at listing time. If we are able to match one from our spares, we'll annotate the listing and raise the price a bit.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are so few and so insignificant a set of tiny flaws, it's really one that presents to the eye as pristine. There are a couple of tips of long leaves behind the pair of fan-tailed pheasants that miss their pointed tips. Interior has the old original silk velvet lining and it is also in very nice condition. The only thing it lacks is the original key. We often can find/match one from our stash of antique casket keys we keep, but to listing time we have not done so. If we locate a working key, we will annotate the listing and raise the price. The measurements are noted on the photos, and it is 11.75" wide (look through photos for other measurements, please).
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
