Superb antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal mother of pearl & gilt ormolu 5.75" pocket watch or pendant display casket, vitrine, "egg" shaped with thick beveled glass and original interior lining! From the trinket boutiques of the mic-1800s Palais Royal, this Victorian era (c.1837-1870 on this one) survives to thrill us today as it once did the Grand Tour travelers, dignitaries and military officers and their ladies who strolled the upper-crust promenade of the gardens of the old Richelieu Palace. The boutiques remain today, as does the Palais Royal, much as they looked then, though a recent upgrading and expansion of larger anchor stores has taken some of its inherent charm away. The elegant wares sold there included the most stunning work of silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewelers, of glassmakers and ceramists. One could buy the finest of fabrics, clothing, and also trinkets and thrilling small decorative objects. Some of these old mother of pearl shell trinkets were in form of a horse or goat or monkey-drawn carriage; others were encased in florals of ormolu. All opening to a surprise such as a sewing set; a perfume vial, or as in this case a watch holder being the more rare.
Very good to excellent for age and type. This one has lovely high pearlescent shimmer. No chips, cracks or damage to the pearl and only some tattering to the interior silk or satin lining. Measurements noted on the photos. The ormolu is complete and undamaged. A lovely old treasure!
