Antique hand carved Black Forest jewelry casket, box, with a game hen up top, c. 1880-1910, it's got a pristine interior that is all original and the carved bird is exquisite.y crafted in the finest Animalier era sculpture, great anatomical study that hasn't been broken at all. The cabriole legs and overall carving elevates this one to fine art and a top quality casket and carver. The old Swiss carvers were so masterful, apprenticed since a young age, and the work is thrilling to see today. I am 25% Swiss, myself (my Father was first generation American, half Swiss and half Danish), and when I look at these stunning old carvings, it make me proud to think the arts were so beautifully applied there before my family left the area. This casket would have likely been a treasured souvenir of someone's Grand Tour, and still has a vendor's stamp on bottom. It has a working lock but no working key attends it. It is dainty, 7" wide and 4.25" front to back, 7" tall when closed.
Very good condition for age and type. The bird is superb, no breaks to tail or wings and even the beak is fine but for the very tiniest nip to the tip. The interior is excellent, far nicer than just about any we've found of its age. No stains, no odors, and seems to have never held anything that would disrupt the nap, even. A nice royal to navy blue. A single flaw keeping it from being pristine, and you can see it from the backside photo, showing that the long fronds of fern have been broken off and reattached there, leaving one and an open chunk that were never restored. Front front view and display, you'll never notice that, but we bring your attention to it as the one flaw notable for your review.
