A Grand Tour souvenir of Lucerne, Switzerland, this one is a hinged match box or perhaps cigar/cheroot box with ashtray, and has the rare hand carved lion up top that is a symbolic figure of Lucerne, and is the mourning monument for their soldiers lost fighting with and for French King Louis XVI (and Marie-Antoinette) in the French Revolution. Lucerne, Switzerland is a stunningly beautiful old city. I was there a couple of years ago now, and wishing I could go back. But I digress. The lion in Switzerland is actually a very old stone sculpture. It is a giant dying lion carved out of a wall of sandstone rock above a pond at the east end of the medieval town. When you visit, definitely see it. The small carving you see here is a very nice capture of it, in form and in emotion.
Very good to excellent condition, no chips and only a rub to the lion's nose. The ash tray has been recently brass-polished and is at a high shine for its next owner. Measurements are noted on the photos. But basically it is 4" x 3", 3" high when closed.
