Over the years we've had a number of these late 1700s to early 1800s French banded agate specimen boxes, but this is by far the largest we've ever seen or offered. The box is a full 5" in length, 3.25" in depth and 3" tall when closed. The stones comprising the casket (10 in all) are both exceptional for their color and banding, but also present without any chips or damage. Thrilling to own, display and collect, this is the largest of these old ones I've ever seen. Collectors take note. I'm sure we won't own it long.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. No flaws to note. At a full 5" long, it's not only remarkable for its size, it's also in excellent undamaged condition. Each panel of the natural cut and polished natural banded agate is beveled and is free of any chips or hairlines or cracks. All four ball feet are intact and undamaged. It seems remarkable to know how old it is and how unscathed by time this one truly is. The dore bronze framework into which the cut stones are placed is also excellent and shows only a little patina of age for it's long long fragile life. A spectacular find!
