A spectacular find! The Veillard (old man, or "Michelange") mark tells us this set was made between 1819-1838, so it was not used during any of the Napoleonic War campaigns but it is that type of item - made for a traveler, for a military officer, who each carried their own dining utensils in fitted cases. That case might well have been rather massive, fitted with many many serving and vanity items, as Napoleon's Necessaire on display in the Napoleon III apartments of the Louvre even now. The "campaign" goods, for travel or war, brought a civil experience to that which might otherwise not be. The same is evidenced here in the single elegant and pristine 18k gold on sterling silver (vermeil) fork and spoon, so beautifully housed in the original case made just for these 2 pieces. One would avoid the issue of contaminated utensils and therefore often a set like this made the difference of health during one's travels near and far. And now, the set is fun to take along on your own Grand Tour, pull them out and use at table - along with your best couteaux pliant (folding knife). I have one friend and customer who is just now leaving for a Grand tour to celebrate his 50th birthday, and we've found the perfect travel goods for his voyage - similarly grand. Such grand traditions, elegant grand style.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. The only issue to note is that the old leather had, typically, lost its self-hinge over time, and there has been a leather panel adhered nicely to replace the self-hinge of the original case. The clamps are both there, and the interior super-soft lamb suede is clean, no stains, no evidence of deterioration or flaw. Fork goes in first, then leather and then spoon. No scratches on the elegant stunning utensils - thickly layered in either 18k or 22k yellow gold. The weight of the silver is 106 gr. Measurements are noted on photos.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
