A superb liqueur or brandy decanter with threaded secure cap, this elegant serving piece will be perfect for table or side table service. The bulbous carafe body is wheel engraved crystal and it is beautifully mounted in finest French sterling silver. The Mercury 1 profile tells us it is guaranteed to be .950/1000 pure silver, the world's finest, and that this one was made for export. The Mercury profile was used on items specifically made to export, rather than the Minerve #1 mark we would normally see. My photographer didn't capture the small punch mark which would identify our silversmith, so I'll need to find that one and do our research and add to our listing. The carafe is what the French refer to as a "carafon" or small carafe designed specifically for liqueur, used in service of aperitif. A shot cup of delicious spirits to enliven the taste buds ahead of a fine meal. You'll thrill in use, but also in display of this one. I've very rarely found this type, with the screw-on cap. Usually a stopper suffices. Measurements noted directly on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition without any chips nor cracks, and no damage to the finely crafted sterling silver. Possibly some light evidence of use, but very little. Dating it will depend upon silversmith's marks, but the Mercury #1 has been in use since 1838. I'd guesstimate this one at c.1890-1915, however.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
