An exceptionally fine Napoleon III era (c.1850-70) desk top box, in the size and form we think of as having been a glove box, but this one is more ornate than most and just a splendid enough box to house a gentleman's jewelry (or a lady's) in magnificent high style. The box is of the quality we'd expect from one of Paris' finest 19th century ebenistes such as Tahan, Vervelle, Sormani, or Girous or G. Keller - all of whom both made and were luxury purveyors for the master work of others in Paris and are names we always love seeing on a lock plate. This box is not signed but certainly is top quality enough to have been. I think it is Tahan. We've had several made similarly (in a variety of sizes, forms) and most have the addition of a cartouche of fine old Sevres or Old Paris painted porcelain set there on top and/or sides. If you''ve watched us long, you know the ones I mean. We have a couple of fabulous old jardiniere just now that are by that same maker. Numerous among them have had Tahan lock plate engraving. But I digress. This box has a fabulous interior, clean and without damage and ready to be proudly opened to reveal whatever contents its next one might choose to install within. Whether jewelry, gloves, precious old letters, legal documents or just left empty, this will become your favorite, I feel certain.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, for age and type. The chevron angled grain of the old Kingwood is always a thrill to see and is rich in both color and grain. Set as it is into the elaborate framework of cast bronze, it is elevated further to opulence. The interior is elegant claret red moire or watered silk, all in fine condition. No stains, no odors. The photos tell it all. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no loss to the veneer in elegant Kingwood. Measurements noted in full on our photos, but it is 10.5" long, 4.5" tall and wide. I do not have a working key at listing time, but we sometimes can match some of our spares and if so, we'll annotate our listing to say it has a key. Priced without.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
