The figure we offer here is quite obviously a hand carved figure taken from a large carved alter much like the one you see in our final photo. That alter piece is one on view in the Bode Museum, Berlin, and helped me to see exactly how our flat-backed carved saint might have been mounted in its origin. The one we show as example is not presented as the one from which this figure comes, of course, but to show the item in situ as it might have once been. We note that alter piece is dated 1270, and we think ours is a few centuries later, though these old wood carvings become very difficult to date and it might well be earlier than 1500s. Your chance to own a museum quality carving, however. The measurements are noted on the images. This item was purchased in France. We are unsure if it's a French figure or Northern European. We've seen these carved alter pieces in France, as well, but show one recently viewed in Berlin for reference only.
Very good condition for age and type. This does not mean it is perfect. Please note that we offer antique items and wood carvings will almost always show some light loss or a few wood worm holes from very old damage. These imperfections are part of the charm and value and help us to differentiate modern Chinese reproductions which have no flaws to speak of (pleas know your sellers!!). This one is shown very well in our images, and from all viewpoints. Please review fully. It does not show any restoration evidence, no breaks.
If this item includes any CITES Appendix I materials, all state and federal documentation and certificates required by law for commercial sale, import or export, have been obtained for it. Proper legal paperwork will be included with it at shipment.
