Wonderful antique Victorian to Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved desk or writing table top folding book rack, shaped & carved 14 1/4" base with folding sides depicting two bird figures & ornate surrounding foliage! We've had these with everything from bears to foxes to Aesop themed animals on the ends. We've had one or two with long tailed pheasants - usually fruits of the hunt or forest animals. So it's fun to have a regular bird on this one. Takes it out of that 'cabin' feel and puts it right into any decor you're working with. Great for English Manor interior, along with flowers and old needlepoints. Or also fine with contemporary furnishings and a 'Green' leaning interior. We know you'll have the perfect desk or table top, or shelf for this one. I've used them in guest rooms with a few books about our area, a few novels - the perfect evening reading materials on a bedside table. And I used one for a long time with a selection of our leather-bound antique books, too. You might want this one in your kitchen for cookbooks.
Good to very good condition. The most notable flaw is that normally these 'telescope' or expand to a greater width, the sides sliding in the base along grooves or channels. This one has breaks to one side, the upper channels, and the sliding portions have been glued in place so the maximum width is 14.25". A small chip or two to the figural sides, wing tip on the right side bird but, as you can see, the carvings are actually in really great shape and have the attractive lighter natural finish. Sure to please. Hinges are strong, sides fold flat for storage. No cracks in the beautiful old wood. See pictures for all measurements.
