This painting has been hanging in my home for years. I love the exceptional detail and fine large size. I have loved having him, and will surely be forever sad to see him go, once sold. But it's time for some changes.
Artist signed, but we do not have further information to help us research who this signature belonged to. If you recognize it, please share info with us. What we know is it's a superb 19th century oil painting on stretched linen canvas, and in the old original frame which has had a bit of facelift. The very large 34.5" x 29.5" frame has had a band of teal/blue added and it really does set off the painting as you can see. This fabulous jolly gentleman with his spectacles and their long neck chain, who holds his gloves and touches his gold watch chain sets the tone for a distinguished room, and is a splendid work of art.
Very good to excellent, no tears or holes, no restoration visible or known other than that teal area on the old gold frame. The painting dates c.1840-70. We can see that it is signed by the artist, but we do not have the ID nor the artist's name to work with in research. The frame has has a very nice refurbishment, and while it is the old original frame, it shows much newer, fresher, and fun.
