While most would identify this as French opaline, I have seen this same beautiful old glass server (and owned another before it) in the Museum for Applied Arts in Vienna. A rich repository of Bohemian glass, including wonderful old Moser pieces that's well worth visiting next time you're in Vienna. An entire large room devoted entirely to art glass can be found there, along with a rich collection of elegant arts, enamels, etc. etc. But I digress. This large and superb work of glassmaker's art is Moser, though unsigned. I will trust to the museum's curators for our own assessment, after all. The handle is .800 silver, though I don't see a mark. An elegant collection piece for display and/or use at table or to hold a few opulent guest soaps and rolled hand towels in your guest or master bath. I think that's where this one will be until it is sold.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The c.1830-50 double shell is in thick old opaline glass which has been hand decorated in applied gold, most all of which remains in fine form. The handle is silver and does detach from bottom side (wingnut) for ease in shipment and storage. It might benefit from more elbow grease in polishing it, but we're showing it as it is for the beauty of the repousse work in the hollow form. There is a single flaw to note and we have marked it on our images for your full review. A ver small rim nip which could be polished out by a glass worker or repairman. Our glass repairman takes forever, however, so we're offering it as you see it. Isn't it fabulous!
