It’s a bit shocking how heavy this very old solid wood frame is. I was so thrilled when it made it in from Paris without damage. The painting is superb! If you love the old Flemish-inspired French “Nature Morte” themes, you’ll love this one. The evening meal, a prayer of thanksgiving for the bounty of 3 fish and a cabbage or lettuce head, wheat. The tipped bucket and pottery pitcher are also beautifully crafted by this artist. Painting is large, (see measurements noted on photos) Signed by the artist, I’ve shown his signature but can’t quite make it out clearly and therefore haven’t been able to research this one. Wonderful palette, very nicely preserved, it dates along with its frame to the last half of 1800s.
Very good to excellent for age and type. Frame is heavy old hardwood and with gesso/gilt appliqué in remarkable condition for age and type. The painting is exceptional in all ways. Originally done on linen canvas, it remains on the original stretcher mount. There is a little looseness to the canvas visible at a certain angle of light, upper left of images, and we’ve taken pains to tilt so the light shows it to you for your evaluation. I’m sure a little adjustment to the stretcher tightness is all that is needed there, and again, it only shows in a certain angle of light. There are a couple of very small dots of paint missing, the worst of them detailed in a very big closeup so you can see it is tiny. Very nicely preserved! Frame misses almost nothing of its applique work, and displays beautifully. Patina of age to it. Solid hardwood.
