Fabulous antique Victorian to early Edwardian era hand carved Black Forest style 26 7/8" tall wall barometer & thermometer, ornate with pierced or reticulated foliage accents, two large winged griffin figures and mascaron style bust at the top! Everyone's got a perfect spot for one of these superb antique hand carved wood cased barometers. One of our favorite home details, really, and works in Country French or English Manor interiors, either one. Perfect for traditional homes, ski lodge or cabin decor, as well. The carved wood case is entirely hand done, artistry of the old Swiss carvers. The aneroid barometer's card dial is noted in French (Swiss French regions) and is in working order as far as I can tell but we've not tested it. The thermometer is mounted on an enamel on copper plaque with black enamel markings, also fully intact but not tested for accuracy. But, the real treasure here is in the decorative potential. Fabulous figures here and immense visual appeal, don't miss it!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. This one dates c.1880-1910, and is in a beautiful used state. It has somewhat of a glossy finish to a lovely old wood grain and may have had a newer clear coat applied. I see nothing missing, no breaks, a few very minor chips on tips of leaves and one on the nose of the left size griffin figure. It looks like there are two hairline cracks to the enamel on the thermometer plaque, around the 17 and 50 degree markings. As noted, thermometer and barometer are fully intact but we've not tested either for accuracy. A lovely old one! See pictures for measurements.
