An exceptionally nice and complete vanity and sewing compendium, French "necessaire", with loads of the original old implements and jars, etc., still in the layers of trays. The jar/bottle set, (6 pieces, including an inkwell) look like fine old French sterling silver and are very heavy French quad plate, instead. The sewing set in the box is French sterling, however, and so we have both. The box is in very nice condition, indeed. Our photos show you that even the old silk interior is very well preserved. We have one of the bottles with a chip on the neck and we've shown it very clearly and large in our photos so you can see that it's probably half gone, and yet the stopper is in place and the screw-on cap will screw on. That's the only flaw on any of the jars or implements other than light sign of age/use. I polished the silver plate caps and they're very well preserved and no rubs, so you'll always mistake them for solid sterling silver. Boxes and layers of holders for brushes, toothbrush and powders, etc., etc., are still there but the brushes are not. We've tried to show it all but you'll still be surprised when you receive this one and start to explore. That's one of the great pleasures of these wonderful old french boxes, after all. This one is early Napoleon III, and shows that carved ripple edging that is a carryover from the style of Charles X (1830-40), but we think this set is c.1850-70. Lock works and the key is present. Fabulous set! The box has all of its brilliant brass stringing in place, as well, and looks beautiful open or closed. Box is 10.5" x 7.5" and is 4" tall when closed.
Very good to excellent condition, mostly noted above. One bottle has a chipped neck. The silver plate capped jars are otherwise very fine, and silver is heavy plate and completely covers. I'd have definitely thought they were sterling silver like the sewing pieces. There are a few older steel items in the set, collected and came with it so we'll leave them there for you as a gift. One is a small umbrella needle case that is wonderfully charming. A stylus and a bodkin, a stiletto, and a small corkscrew and larger file-like tool. Those are just gifts left in place.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time.
