I've recently purchased several very beautiful late 1800s hand painted Sevres porcelain pieces (Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres), with marks known to have been used from 1848 onward on white porcelain. Should the mark have a slash through it, we'd know the pieces were hand decorated by someone other than an artist at the Sevres manufactury. The highly sought after Sevres name represents a history that dates to 1673, and which took on Royal significance with the purchase of the firm in 1738 (as Manufacture de Vincennes) by Louis XV and & for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, who oversaw the business in order to compete with fine hard paste porcelain manufacturers in Meissen and Chantilly. The business still is in operation today, though the earlier pieces carry and retain highest values. And the rest is history.
This pair of pieces carry date of 1874, and have been hand painted in enamels, floral and garden butterflies gracing each piece. The size of a large sized cup, probably for chocolate in it's time, but the size of an English teacup for today's standards, (measurements on the photos for review) and the saucer proportionally made, but is deep, a bit like a fruit bowl, and can do double service. The 2 pieces are painted to match, but they have different production dates, one being 74 and the other quite impossible to make out, though it looks a bit like 69 to me. You will note I have several other pieces listed that came from the same estate, perhaps dated within 10 years and with the same motifs, for a lovely single breakfast service should you be inclined to buy all and use them. As display pieces, they are each fabulous. Cup and deep saucer sold in this offering. Other pieces sold separately.
Excellent condition throughout. No chips, no cracks nor hairlines. Lovely paintings of nature including bugs, butterflies, birds and bees as well as field flowers.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
