Two views of Paris monuments, c. 1860, back-painted on glass (eglomise), and also backed with pieces of mother of pearl which makes parts of the buildings shimmer as if light was passing through. The depictions here are monuments popular in mid-1800s, but less so now. One might not recognize them unless you know Paris very well. The tall one is the Tower of Saint-Jacques, in the Chatelet area. The other building is the Bourse, or "purse", which is the monetary heart of Paris and was then their equivalent of Wall Street, burgeoning stock market for the new Industrial era. The 2 perfume bottles are still in the silk velvet fitted interior of the leather-clad box or casket into which they were originally placed. Souvenir of the Grand Tour, mid-1800s, this item would have been thrilling to an early traveler and taken home as memento of their visit to Paris. Perhaps an industrialist, or certainly a stock owner/buyer, since he/she chose The Bourse. And of course Tour Saint-Jacques is one of the oldest monuments in all Paris, dating 1100s. Definitely worth a visit. Last autumn's buying trip, my apartment was very near it and I passed it every day at least twice. Great area!
Very good to excellent for age and type. The paintings are each in very fine condition for age and type, and are set into the caps of 2 lovely old perfume bottles. The brass fitting on one is slightly pushed, as you can see, but otherwise these are truly exceptional. No chips, no cracks, and they display beautifully. Not for use, though, since you'll note neither of the original stoppers remains in the set. Still, the fine old leather-clad box is excellent and misses only the ring handle that would have fit the mount up top. No real wear or loss to the leather and the form is lovely. A very fine set, indeed, and fun to display as souvenir of your own Grand Tour of Paris.
