Antique Pastel Portrait in Ornate Gilt Gesso & Wood Frame: H. Muller dated 1848
Fabulous antique Victorian era hand painted pastel portrait in the original ornate gilt gesso & wood 18 3/8” shadow box style frame, signed H. Muller 1848! Isn’t this gorgeous! The portrait of a beautiful young woman, done on paper and has a few small age spots and imperfections but is still in fine condition given its age and composition. Possibly Ottilie von Goethe, there are online references to drawings of her done by Muller and easily searchable. The frame is especially striking, shadow box in style meaning that it has grooves to hold a glass facade to protect the inner velvet mat and gesso portion of the frame. The portrait also protected by an inner glass but we’re leaving the front glass out for shipping (large and I’m just sure it would get broken and damage the gesso frame, portrait or both in transit. I’ve not done much research on the artist but here is a bit found online:
Heinrich Müller (1793-1866), portrait painter, engraver and lithographer. Müller received drawing lessons from his father, who was employed at the open character Institute in Weimar, and continued his studies at the Munich Academy continued. He owned the Weimar lithographic institution. (Portraits from the Goethe-county catalog:... Christina Kröll Hg by Jörn Göres Dusseldorf. Goethe Museum, Anton and Catharina Kippenberg Foundation 1976, p 17).
A beautiful portrait, a beautiful large frame, all original and in wonderful condition!
Very good condition. As noted and visible in the images and scans, there are some age imperfections to the portrait itself but relatively wonderfully preserved given the medium and age. The frame has some darkening to the red velvet mat along the bottom but is in otherwise fabulous shape. Also, as noted, we’ll leave the front glass out for shipping to reduce the possibility of damage in transit. Easily replaced once received. See pictures for all measurements.
