These have always captivated the public, from the time they were initially offered from the boutiques of the old Richelieu Palace in Paris, c. late 1700s through 1850 or so, to today. The old Palace was a social center for the elite and leaders of the world, and in its time a shopping and theatre center for very early Grand Tour travelers, too, who delighted in the whimsical offerings like this little egg box. Whether filled with sewing items, perfume bottles, or bonbons, they captured the hearts and imagination of children and adults, alike. This one is fine old white opaline, hand enameled in front and the old ormolu framework includes a bird up top with leaves and vine, echo of same in front bottom and a couple of ring handles at the sides.
Very good to excellent condition, no chips and no cracks and even the hand painted decorative front is fully intact. The leaves and bird are fine and only a bit of age to the metal at the lip. Both hinges and clasp are strong and working fine. A lovely addition or beginner for French opaline admirer's collection.
