Superb Antique Black Forest Cigar Chest, Not Humidor, Presenter with Carved Game Birds, Hunt Plaques
This is really a special one. We've had a number of hand carved Black Forest cigar chests through the years, and always look for them. This is the first we've found that has carved "fruits of the hunt" plaques as doors, and also a fine carved nature scene 3 game birds up top. You see the ibex and the mountain goat carved into nature settings on each of those two hinged doors in front, and the further quality of the entire large-sized cabinet.
Very good to excellent for age and type. A chip or two to the leaves behind the birds up top, and a tiny nip to a beak (visible in our images) but no warping and the carving is exquisite. A fine sculpture of the Animalier movement, very lifelike game birds top the lift-hinged top. Unusual inside, it has swing-away sides fitted for cigars, and can hold and serve 64 cigars. There is a lock that appears to be a working lock, but we do not have a working key to fit it at listing time. We'll do our best to match a spare (we gather up all we can when on buying trips, but stash is low just now). If found, we'll annotate our listing. But priced without a key at listing time.
Measurements: 11.75" wide, 10" front to back, 13" tall

If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
