Exquisite & rare 96pc+ antique French hallmarked sterling silver flatware set, a 7pc place setting for TWELVE (and extras) with ornate Neo-Classical style pattern with musical instrument motif! Magnificent! One of two comprehensive antique French flatware sets that we're adding this week, both truly superb in every aspect and guaranteed to please! This set consists of a 7pc place setting for twelve with an additional six each in the luncheon or dessert sized forks & spoons: 12 Dinner forks, 12 dinner spoons, 12 dinner knives, 12 luncheon knives, 12 teaspoons, 18 luncheon/dessert forks, 18 luncheon/dessert spoons and there is an additional meat carving fork & gigot that matched the ebony or ebonized wood handled knives (I'll also look to see if we have the matching meat carving knife to complete the set). All as fine as can be! A very rare style, the pattern is referred to as "Decor de Trophees de Musique Style Neoclassique" in our guide, bagpipes, horns or bugles, flowers & foliage and even the ever present French bow & ribbon! All but the knives bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmark, the tiny number "1" within those marks means they're in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The silversmith marks on the luncheon or dessert sized pieces are for Paul Canaux & Cie. (Co.), Paris circa 1892-1911). The dinner & teaspoon sized pieces are for Olier & Caron, Paris circa 1910-1936 so the set must date to around 1910-1911. The knives are not original to the sterling flatware set but they work and look fabulous and are basically just thrown in for free at this price. They also have sterling collars (no hallmarks) and the original steel blades (marked "A. Transon, Paris"). A truly fabulous ensemble, don't miss them!
Very good condition! Some slight surface scuffs to the sterling forks & spoons, indicative of light use and age. The forks to have some knife marks on the tines but none of the pieces have any real damage, no dents, bends or repairs to note. The knives are all in great shape, a few handles possibly with thin age/drying splits and the blades are all as fine as can be. The blades are the original pre-stainless so there may be some age tarnish and/or corrosion marks here & there (I'll add more detailed pictures of them soon). The set comes in four black leather covered storage boxes or chests, as shown, not original to the flatware but they are of the same age and work great as intended. See pictures for all weights and measurements.
