We've got a backlog of wonderful old Black Forest bears, waiting for me to get them up and listed. The wonderful old hand cared Black Forest bears are always a favorite. Such charm and anatomical accuracy, they're fun to decorate with at Holidays, or to collect and display in clusters. Like happy little pets that require no feeding or walking. From the Animalier movement in Eruope, these can date as early as 1850s, as late as 1920s and they were a favorite souvenir of our early Grand Tour trailers. Made up in a variety of poses and purposes from a tiny one to cork your wine bottle to a large one to hole that wine bottle, or even furniture items like umbrella stand or smoking tables featuring the bears. There seems no end to the charm of these little guys.
This one is a mid-sized guy, 7" long, and beautifully carved. He lumbers along and is a superb anatomical study. Glass eyes and painted mouth, perhaps an old nip to a toe, slight roughness to an ear, chin, heel, that only need a bit of Old English to cover them up - they're not chips so much as rubs. I didn't want to cover them - prefer you see them ahead of buying. Our photos show him from all angles of view. Isn't it amazing what those old Swiss and German carvers could do with a pocket knife!
