I'm always drawn to these great old Grand Tour traveler's vanity cases, valise, or 'trousse d' voyage' as the French call them, and never more so than when they still have the old original vanity items inside! Though it's missing a few pieces, this would have originally held all the necessities of the trip, right down to the three thick glass cologne bottles, powder and toothbrush jars. There would originally have been a mirror held in the lid, a folding vanity etui intact but missing a tool or two. Think of the traveler, probably a gentleman with this one, laying out his splendid set on the dresser in his 1840-60s hotel room, about to wander out and take in the sights and sounds of some grand city or other, certainly by horse and carriage, and likely attended by servants (plural, if the size of this 'necessaire' is any indication of wealth, and it is). I'll leave you to your imagination and to our many photos. The exterior in deep navy leather, a Louis Vuitton Epi style grain pattern and as elegant as can be and nearly pristine! Gilt bronze locks, etc. and it even has TWO original old working keys!
Very good condition. The exterior is pristine with hardly even a blemish worth mentioning. As mentioned, the case has two keys and both work. The intact implements, cases, jars, bottles and all are all in fine condition, a gilded metal rather than sterling silver tops. No maker that I can see other than the 'HR Depose' marks on the locks. This is one you might well see in a movie as a superb prop! Amazing! See pictures for measurements.
