Delightful antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 8" thermometer stand with woman & lamb figures, unique spiraled thermometer and "Souvenir d' Amelie-les-Bains" inscription! As charming as can be with the figural theme and I just love these old spiraled thermometers, all quite unique and rare. The base of the piece has an enamel souvenir inscription from Amelie les Bains, a town in the south of France near the Mediterranean. Two ink stamps, one on the back and the other one the bottom that read "C. Riviera, Amelie Les Bains", likely the original selling retailer. The town has numerous sulphur springs that were commonly used as baths by sufferers from rheumatism and illnesses of the lungs. By the end of the 19th century there were two bathing establishments, one of which preserved remains of Roman baths, and a large military thermal hospital. A fabulous decorative accent, don't miss it!
Very good condition. A chipped branch tip or two on the right side tree and the lower portion of the woman's walking stick is broken. The thermometer appears to have been reset or secured by small wood segments around it. No damage to the thermometer itself, it appears to work though we've not tested its accuracy. See pictures for all measurements.
