Must have been a carved cabinet door, this lovely old hand carved rectangular game plaque. Perfect now to frame and hang as wall art, or to incorporate into your own customized cabinetry at home, or use it as center for a door of a recessed wall cabinet or bar - get creative with these fabulous old 19th century carved panels! I'd love to see this one as door to a recessed bar, myself. And in my other home. But it's not going to ever get done since the walls there are 18" thick limestone. You, on the other hand, might have the perfect spot for this one. The carving is wonderful on all but the birds' heads, I think. They're a little less lifelike than are the oak leaves, acorns, bodies of the birds. Wonderful theme "Fruits of the Hunt", and the ribbon and bow and hunter's horn are lovely finishing touches. It's extra large at 30" x 15.5" and is 2" at deepest point of the bas relief carving.
Very good condition for age and type, you can see that I've marked a hairline split at the joint of 2 boards, visible from both front and back. I didn't want our workers to glue/clamp it until we'd shown it as it is for your inspection. The panel should be wonderful when that line is re-glued and clamped tightly back together. It's not a crack. It is just the place where 2 boards are joined to make the width. There are a few holes, evidence of a very old woodworm infestation, but not much and it is not the least pithy anywhere. Just that detail we often see in the old hand carved wood items, and one that reproduction furnishings are often "painted" to mimic. This is the real thing, very old. I'd say mid-1800s on this one. Probably out of an old buffet, cabinet for books or curios. Measurements are also noted on the photos.
