Wonderful matched PAIR of antique French .800 (nearly sterling) silver & Baccarat swirled glass or crystal inkwells with ornate Louis XV or rococo style silver tops, interlaced "MT" or "MF" monograms and unique travel style with spring-loaded stopper in the lid and front locking clasps! A beautiful pair and surely would have been in a large fitted travel compendium originally, nestled in the Palais Royal fitted interior with other necessities for the Grand Tour traveler including vanity items, writing accoutrement, etc. They were definitely made as a travel pair with the interior stoppers to keep the ink from leaking and the clasps on the front to secure the lids closed when not in use. Ornate, heavy solid silver tops and the swirled glass bodies are basically a 'signature' of Baccarat though they're not actually marked. The hallmarks on the lids & collars include the French boar's head mark, commonly used on smaller silver pieces and designates at least .800 or better silver content (80% pure so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). There are tiny silversmith marks also, most likely for Christophe David, Paris circa 1860s. 18k gold 'vermeil' lined interiors also. Simply gorgeous even with the flaws.
Very good condition. One of the glass bodies has a rather long crack running down one side and also some base/corner chipping but it doesn't leak. No other damage to note other than some wear tot he vermeil. See pictures for measurements.
