Set with a miniature painting of Mary without her veil (typically expressed without veil as a young virgin, not yet the mother of Christ), She wears Mary's symbolic celestial blue robe, however. She is protected under glass and probably would benefit from the cover being taken off and her re-set into the oval slightly more perfectly, but we'll leave that decision to the next owner of this exceptionally fine late 1700s to early 1800s hand carved French holy font. The carving is so fine, one expects to see "Gueret Freres" (Gueret Brothers), known to be the finest carvers in all France. The carving is just stunning, and bears a deep carved bas relief crown that is adorned with the Fleur de Lys, symbol of the Boubon Kings of France. We think this is either from the era of Marie-Antoinette & Louis XVI, or the French Restauration King Charles X (1824-1830, deposed in 1830). You'll want to read more about the Bourbon Royals. I would not be in the least surprised if this piece is directly related to one or another.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Very well preserved as you see it, I'm unable to find a single chip in the carved wood, intricate as it is. There was probably a ceramic, glass, or zinc or metal interior to the font, and that is no longer with it. But just look at the stunningly fine quality of the carving. The crown elevates it, as does the miniature painting, even though there are a few flakes from her blue gown (visible in our photos). No breaks to original cover glass nor to the painting. Measures a full 13" tall and 9" wide (other measurements noted directly on our photos. As fine a carved item as we've ever offered, probably far earlier than the Gueret Freres, however, thinking of that now. Don't miss it! Won't last long, I'm certain. SO rare!
