The type of wax seal found in the c. 1700s to earliest 1800s Palais Royal necessaire sets, layered with travel necessities and luxurious tools one might need as a top officer in Napoleon's military on campaign. The seal survives with a fine gold shield, 18k solid gold, and no monogram to help us research it. The interesting part is that the matrix on this one is a splendid intaglio-carved bloodstone that prints out the figure of a Napoleonic warrior, soldier, and he stands over a small figure easily identified as nubian, black, blackamoor. I don't know if it's an issue of relative size like the old Roman sculptures, where important figures are shown very much larger than others, or if it represents a soldier saving a small child. The French did not participate in slave trade, and their fascination with the exotic peoples and art and culture is a feature and theme played out throughout the Napoleonic era. The seal is fabulous, and in excellent undamaged condition as well. The body is mother of pearl, and the matrix casement is sterling silver. Very beautifully crafted start to finish.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. I see no damage to note. There is a very tiny bit of red sealing wax adhered to the silver that holds the bloodstone matrix. Mother of pearl is highly pearlescent and beautiful, undamaged. The shield is 18k gold, tested but not marked. The seal is a petit one made for a travel set or necessaire, and is 2.5" long. The matrix is very slightly off-set, and might benefit from being remounted. I think we can do that ahead of sending this out to our buyer, and would have done it if I'd noticed it before looking at our HUGE enlarged photos. Sorry I didn't notice before. Your can see how nicely it's preserved, however, and no chips nor cracks nor damage to the matrix or mother of pearl, nor the silver. Fabulous!
