Fabulous antique Black Forest hand carved 12" wide double inkwell or inkstand, jet black Victorian finish and RARE with TWO FOX figures attacking a lamb on top, ornate foliage around the front with the highly unique addition of a lizard & snail amidst the leaves & vines! Quite unique! In the animalier tradition, the top of the rear stamps, pen or accoutrement compartment features two bushy-tailed foxes attacking a poor little sheep or lamb figure in the center. The compartment in the shape of a log itself, hollowed out and hinged to form a relatively hidden compartment. Two glass ink pots mounted at the sides of a larger pen tray, vines & leaves carved into it also. The front with more detailed leaves on the vine with a delightful lizard lurking on the left and a snail making its way along the right. Highly rare figures and as charming as can be! This one is carved from one large, solid block of hardwood. We're not completely sure but it may be old growth European oak, definitely not the more common linden wood used for most Black Forest carvings. It also has a jet black finish, popular for Victorian items but not common in Black Forest pieces at all. Lovely! Don't miss it!
Very good to excellent condition. There are a few small chips but, as you can see from the detail pictures, nothing to detract from the overall impressive nature of the piece. It likely had larger cut glass inkwells originally but, you never know, those glass pots could be as intended. The rear compartment is hollowed out in a relatively rough manner, no lock with key here, just hinged to open and close. A fabulous piece. See pictures for all measurements.
