If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
This one is a charming little smoker's stand. There's a barrel for cigars, or pipe and bag of tobacco; a bin for matches; a shield that would have had a shaped piece of emery board or sand paper to use as a striker panel; and a waste or ash tray. The cute little pooch carved and holding the striker panel for his master is without any chips or damage and is full of personality. The set is just in from France, but is a Swiss-carved item of the Black Forest regions of 19th century Europe. Slight rubs on edges reveal the lighter wood beneath the darker stain, and can be easily touched up should you wish to. We've left him just as found (cleaned up, but not touched up) so you can see what rubs there are. There is a smallish chip or rim rub on bottom of the base, visible in our 1st image. Otherwise, no chips not note. A charming item, and you can use it to serve up cigars or just candy canes, whatever. Measurements are noted on the photos, also: Base is 6" x 5" slightly oval, and overall the piece is 6" tall. Dog is about 3.5" tall.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time.
