When I was last in Paris, I bought this pair of gorgeous hand drawn portraits, each then colored in pastels, chalk. The portrait you see here is of the mother. Her daughter is offered separately. Dressed in a typical attire of c.1850-70s, a blue bow at the bodice and lace collar gives a bit of color to her dark silk dress. Hair pulled smoothly back and in French chignon of the era, she is a visage of fashion and the Napoleon III or Victorian woman's modest style. The old frame is the original and is a lemon-gilt frame that has lots of age to the finish, as you can see. The cut/bent paper mat is one made by the artist and adds to the simple and elegant portrait's appeal. Fabulous for a bedroom, or bookshelf display. You'll probably want the younger girl, too. She will be sold separately.
Very good condition for age and type, the old frame shows age and has lost some of the bright lemon-gilt finish, as you can see. The old lemon-gilt frames are highly sought after so this represents a fine antique in its own right. The pastel portrait is housed under glass and set off by the hand made paper mat, as well. No rips, no tears, no stains but a little light foxing of age. A superb painting, or more accurately, pencil, conte and pastel drawing. It has been opened, glass cleaned and then sealed again as you can see from back, probably within the past 30 years. Measurements noted on photos. Outer frame is 15" x 12.5" x .5" overall. And the oval aperture for the painting is 9" x 7".
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
