This is a very early 1800s item, finest old French unique marquety work with pink and mother of pearl worked with brass in the manner of Charles Boulle, and thus referred to as "boulle". It's rare in coloration, but more rare in form. This is a hinged sealing wax box with small wax seal. The hinged panel folds open and holds the small seal, and there is ample room in the box for sealing wax and matches. The style you see here is museum quality and from the Louis-Philippe era, well before stamps and envelopes we're used to, when notes were folded and sealed with sealing wax and one's monogram or "seal" or "cachet". A complete set here, lacking only some red sealing wax. Fun desktop item, and a stunning old box for collectors.
Very good to excellent condition, no losses in the boulle, and no real lifts in the brass marquetry, either. Highly polished brass looks like gold against the pink and mother of pearl. The little wax seal that comes with it is also in very fine condition and is monogrammed as you can see. a well-used matrix that will imprint a G and V, I think. That matrix is in French sterling silver. Measurements are noted on our photos.
