Religious themed hand carved walnut plaque, frame: Gueret Freres signature. 16.75" x 12.25" x 1.25" depth. Circa 1840-60s
A rare treasure, this elegantly hand carved crucifix frame in walnut is the work product of perhaps France's finest furniture maker of the 19th century, Gueret Freres (Gueret Brothers). Their signature is only shown on the finest of carved goods. A full-sized armoire or buffet, hutch from this firm will command prices above $50,000. Their smaller works tend to be even finer in the carvings, and such is the case with this fine key cabinet and holy font. I bought this one to keep, and it reminds me so much of the finest carver's work, that of Dutch Master, Grinling Gibbons, whose angels grace the interior choir stall at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and palace walls throughout UK and Europe. His carvings were done in late 1600s to early 1700s, of course, and the Gueret Brothers are mid-1800s. But the quality and fine detail in the lifelike carvings is much the same. Certainly one of the finest sources of 19th century carving. Exceptional carved 16.75" x 12.25" frame, plaque, is entirely hand carved by the artisans of early 1800s Gueret Freres. An intricate combination of religious symbology represented around the oval aperture upon which is mounted the carved Christ figure, which we think is not original to this frame. The carving on the Christ does not compare with that of the signed Gueret Freres carving, as you might notice.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are no serious flaws at all. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines. There is a marination of where the 2 back boards are joined, which can be seen from the back side (see images) but is not on the front, so there is a veneered or 2-panel thickness even to the backing. A stunning array of carvings, skull, rooster, and angel, all sorts of detailed fine carved elements. A true work of sculptural art carved in wood. Review our photos.
