Absolutely magnificent & RARE complete 54pc antique French hallmarked sterling silver table knife set, a 3pc setting for EIGHTEEN with unique armorial medallions or crests including familial heraldry and knight's helmets! The two familial or heraldic banners side by side under the helmet could symbolize the joining of two families, unfortunately I've not been able to find reference to the symbols and so can't elaborate on their history. All pieces in the set have sterling silver handles and includes eighteen larger 9 7/8" dinner knives with stainless steel blades, eighteen 7 7/8" pieces with sterling silver blades and eighteen 8 3/8" knives (twelve of which have stainless steel blades, the other six have "Paris" marked steel blades). Gorgeous! All pieces bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmark, the tiny number "1" within those marks designate them as being in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). Silversmith marks are for Henin Freres, Paris c. 1865-1872. A truly exquisite set, rare to find such a comprehensive and complete service AND with armorial heraldry! Don't miss them!
Very good condition. Just as you see them, stunning! Just barely professionally polished so they all have a bright lustrous shine. The "Inox" marked stainless steel blades are newer, the set has obviously been re-bladed (a definite plus for use, the original blades would have been just steel. As noted above and visible in the images, six of the smaller knives have what appears to be the original "Paris" marked steel blades. I'm not sure why these remain but there you have it. The handles are filled, not solid sterling silver, but the total weight of the set is 94.9 troy ounces or 2952 grams. See pictures for individual weights and measurements.
