Gorgeous antique 19th century Victorian or Napoleon III era neo-classical styled gutta percha double inkwell or inkstand with two gutta percha topped cut crystal inkwells, great armorial style crest & lions and fabulous condition! Rare to find one of these old sets with all of its original inkwells & tops, etc. and this one is even more so because of its reddish brown coloring....rather than the usual black that most gutta percha pieces were made in. Gutta percha or gutta-percha refers to the forerunner of today's plastic, a very dense & heavy substance derived from Malaysian trees that resembles rubber but contains more resin, invented in the 19th c. and used for these gorgeous old inkstands, picture frames & more! A rare piece, don't miss it!
Very good condition. A tiny nip possible but no chips, cracks or repairs to note in the gutta percha. There is a bit of corrosion around the white metal inkwell collars and one chip to a bottom corner of one well. See pictures for measurements.
