Remarkable & rare 19th century Victorian era Black Forest hand carved 16" specimen or jewelry chest, unique cabinet style locking front door with five drawered interior and detailed ferret & bird figural crown! Beautiful and a rare older piece with both exceptional extensive carving AND a very unique figural grouping on top! What appears to be a ferret and game hen quarreling amidst a host of foliage & ground cover! The chest itself is entirely covered in hand carved decoration, a rough wood look with an ornate crest or medallion in front inscribed 'Tresor' (French for 'treasure'). Five carved front drawers inside either for the specimen collector, possibly cigars or jewelry! And, of course, immense decorative appeal!
Very good condition! There is a filled repair to the upper front right corner (below the figures) and what could be a restored split in the front panel/door (a hairline is visible down the center and is likely where two panels were joined, the crack in the front medallion is surely the result of those two panels pulling apart either due to age or drying shrinkage). NO key but the original lock, hinges, etc. are all in place. A small filled chip on the side, just under the upper hinge and there are some worm/bug holes in places. A tiny nip or two to the figures on top but no larger breaks or repairs there. See pictures for measurements.
